France will start stopping migrant vessels in English Channel after UK pressure
France has agreed to begin intercepting migrant vessels in the English Channel, following months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the Prime Minister sent a letter to the French leader urging him to support the plan and saying there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've picked up their migrants, according to official confirmation.
French authorities have rarely intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police representative says personnel will start taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a potential method to snarl the engines of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the former government official left government.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a summit between the UK leader and President, when French police were observed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.
Currently French authorities will again be allowed to stop boats prior to they pick up migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for ways to adapt to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
