No Fewer Than Six Perish in Stampede at Ghana Military Recruitment Drive
No fewer than six people have died amid a stampede at a military recruitment event held in a sports arena in the West African nation.
The midweek "tragic" event appeared to have been caused by "an unexpected surge of candidates who overcame security measures and rushed into the gates," stated a statement from Ghana's armed forces.
Twenty-two others were injured, including five who remain in serious state.
A large crowd had gathered at El-Wak stadium, in the main city, Accra, with the aspiration of joining the military.
The country has a youth unemployment rate of about thirty-two percent, the latest government statistics indicate, and such recruitment events normally draw large crowds and frequently result in disorderly situations.
The closing date to apply for this recruitment was extended by a week to allow for additional candidates, as some had faced difficulties in the application procedure.
Military representative Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin stated the stampede took place ahead of the planned commencement time of 6:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time.
The nation's leader John Mahama has gone to see the injured in hospital.
Order has been restored, and the enlistment process has now begun.
