New research suggests that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these medications must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
