Tanzania Crackdown on Scheduled Demonstration Results in Streets Deserted.
A significant security presence has been deployed throughout the country with officers and soldiers observed on patrol in key urban areas ahead of expected demonstrations against the government scheduled for the nation's independence anniversary.
As of noon, however, no protests had materialized.
People living in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mbeya, Mwanza reported an unusually slow start to the day, with a large number opting to stay home due to doubts about if the demonstrations would proceed.
The demonstrations were called to demand changes to the political system in the wake of October's post-election unrest which resulted in an unconfirmed death toll.
Authorities Admit Employing Force
Officials have conceded employing force against demonstrators, asserting that certain elements aimed to topple the government.
Correspondents noted on Tuesday streets that were largely deserted in the business hub, Dar es Salaam. This was a stark contrast to the city's usual weekday bustle.
Although quiet, the atmosphere remained tense.
Increased Police Presence Nationwide
Armored vehicles were spotted cruising along major roads and intersections, while personnel were stationed at strategic locations, particularly near important public buildings and facilities.
Through online platforms, organizers advised supporters to stay alert, suggesting any demonstrations were unlikely to begin until the afternoon. This communication mirrored past mobilization efforts in the country, when participation grew as the day progressed.
Motorists who ventured out reported frequent checks at roadblocks, where officers questioned drivers about where they were headed.
Official Position and Prohibitions
The government has not issued specific statements on the heightened security measures or on the scheduled demonstrations.
Tanzanian authorities have banned the intended demonstrations and called off independence anniversary events, advising the public to remain at home.
